Of Women And Of Work (Casa delle Letterature, Until 6 April 2012)

The exhibition, which will be open for visitors until 6 April 2012, aims to tell the tale of women working and the conditions they were working under towards the middle of the 20th century.

Special attention is paid to the women working in the Fattoria Autonoma di Città di Castello, over the course of a period lasting from the 1930’s until the 1970’s.

In those days tobacco producing was an almost purely feminine occupation and the so-called tabacchine were often treated extremely badly, with no contracts, no unions and often having to succumb to black mail. They did however manage to maintain their families during times when their was a high disoccupation level amongst men.

The Casa delle Letterature can be found on the Piazza dell’Orologio 3, 00186 Rome (just off the Corso Vittorio Emanuele). Take bus 64 and get off at the Chiesa Nuova stop.

Practical information: Open from Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM – 6:30 PM; phone +39 0668134697.
