Viterbo‘s town museum (Museo Civico) is located in the Piazza Crispi and is one of the most important museums dealing with the history of the area around the city.
The exhibits include Etruscan sarcophagi and various artifacts found in the tombs as well as objects originating from the Roman period.
From the Middle Ages there are numerous pieces of art, including sketches for the Macchina di Santa Rosa and panels painted by Sebastiano del Piombo.
Annius of Viterbo was a 15th century monk who created phony antiquitities, together with made-up stories about the history of Viterbo. A number of his forgeries are on display in the Museo Civico.
