Vatican Museums Free On September 27 2011 (World Tourism Day)

The United Nations have announced that Monday September 27 2011 will be World Tourism Day, which will this year be dedicated to the themes of global warming, climate change and, obviously, tourism.

In accordance with World Tourism Day the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel in Rome will give free entry. The Museums are open from 8.30 AM until 6.30 PM. Final entrance is at 4 PM. If you do not like crowds, it might be an idea to pick a different day for your visit: World Tourism Day falls in the middle of the high season so it will be very busy at the Vatican Museums.

Apart from the Vatican Museums, the Vatican will also offer free tours of the Museo Storico Vaticano in the Palazzo Apostolico Lateranense, near the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano. These tours will be run every hour on the hour, from 9 AM until 12 noon.

For other museums in Rome the normal opening hours and entrance costs will apply on September 27.
