The Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta in Orte was founded in the 9th century, although the baroque impression it makes nowadays is the result of a 1721 renovation by the architects Castrachini and Bizzacchero.

The facade was restored later. Work at it began in 1898 and was finished in 1901. Other renovations had already taken place in the 14th and in the late 16th centuries.
One of the highlights of the church is the 18th century medieval organ, which was constructed using parts of a 15th century musical instrument.
