To most people Porta Portese will mostly be known as the name of the flea market that is held every Sunday morning in the Trastevere district in Rome. It is however also the name of the gate at the beginning of the Via Portuense.
Porta Portese Rome
The Via Portuense used to lead to the city of Portus and is now the main street of the Porta Portese market.
At the end of the 19th century the Porta Portese lost a great deal of its importance, when the Ripa Grande harbor, Rome‘s main river harbor was closed.
Pope Clemens XI had a huge arsenal built just outside the gate, in 1714.
