History Palazzo dei Papi
The Palazzo dei Papi was built as a fortress and residence for the Popes. Construction of the building started in 1255 and in 1266 the work was finished.
The palazzo itself was built in a Romanic style, whereas its Loggia, which was finished in 1267, has Gothic characteristics.
The façade is preceded by a wide staircase and has battlements on top. It has six mullioned windows that are united by one frame.
The Loggia rests on a vault, which is supported by what looks like a pilaster, but is really a cistern feeding water to the fountain in the courtyard below. Seven intersecting arches supported by slender columns are superseded by an elegant entablature.
Its most famous room is the Salone del Conclave, where no fewer than Popes were be elected. Other rooms are nowadays used for conferences and exhibitions.
