Museo Nazionale Romano Rome

The National Roman Museum (Museo Nazionale Romano) was founded in 1889 in order to find housing for Rome‘s ancient art collections. The museum, which is housed in a number of separate locations, can boast one of the most important archaeological collections in the world.

The collection is divided according to place of origin and can be found in the following institutes:

  • Palazzo Altemps: 15th century building, containing the ancient art collections of Roman families like the Boncompagni and the Altemps.
  • At the Terme di Diocleziano location the birth of the Latin language and the earliest history of Rome are illustrated.
  • The Crypta Balbi highlights the transition from the Roman times to the Middle Ages in a specific part of the city.
  • Palazzo Massimo alle Terme
  • Octagonal Hall (Aula Ottagona)
